[...] I could feel the danger around me, tugging at the edges of my brain. There was something here that wanted to devour me. I felt it the way animals feel predators watching them from the dark, poised and waiting for the right moment to pounce and sink their teeth into soft flesh. I was so close to death. I stood on the edge, and I was starting to sway towards that open maw.
I had to resist. For the sake of everyone I loved, I had to resist.
Don’t turn away, the flower whispered.
Everything here was wrong, but this little flower reminded me of all the better things that were right. Things like safety. Like protection. Life. Love. Family.
There was something so important about this place. About this room and the thorns.

From science fiction and fantasy author K.N. Salustro comes a collection of short stories written over the course of 2020. There are no plagues in these pages, the extreme weather comes from a mythical creature, and the biggest disaster you’ll see takes place on a spaceship when someone tries to make baked goods with an incendiary combination of ingredients.
This collection includes stories that are on the more serious side, and ones that are more humorous. Most fall on the fantasy spectrum, with the exception of that one space-faring sci-fi story. These tales may not change the world, but if you’re looking for some escapism, you’ve come to the right place.
